InfoStorm 2.2: a new InfoStorm (reinstall needed)

InfoStorm has been rebuilt from the ground up. Version 2.2 runs on current software (FreeBSD 15, Exim 4.100, SpamAssassin 4, ClamAV 1.x, PHP 8.4 and MySQL 8.4) and uses the standard FreeBSD services instead of its own daemons. The admin interface has been rewritten with security in mind: protected forms, hashed passwords, and a single strictly checked helper for everything that needs root.

What’s new

  • A new admin. It’s organised by task (Domains, Protection, Sending, Messages, Appliance) instead of by program. It has a cleaner look, dark mode, and works on a phone.
  • Recommended settings. Every setting explains what it does and shows the recommended value. Review & reset shows exactly what would change before anything is applied.
  • One page per domain. Each domain follows the default protection until you give it values of its own.
  • Let’s Encrypt. One trusted certificate is used for both the web admin and mail (STARTTLS). It’s renewed automatically, and if it ever can’t be used, the appliance falls back to a self-signed certificate with a clear warning.
  • A much better mail log. Search by sender, recipient, IP, subject or status, across 14 days of logs. Each result is one message with what happened to it and why, and you can open a full trace of every log line.
  • Updates from the web admin. New InfoStorm versions are checked, installed with one click, and rolled back automatically if anything goes wrong. FreeBSD and package updates run from the same page, with a saved boot environment to fall back on.
  • Console setup for network, host name, DNS and management access.

A reinstall is needed

2.2 can’t be installed on top of InfoStorm 1.x. The operating system, the mail software and the database have all changed too much. Existing appliances therefore need a fresh install on FreeBSD 15. Your configuration comes along: domains, spam and virus policies, allow and block lists, relay hosts, smarthosts, filter rules, SMTP users and admin logins are all moved from the old appliance.

This is a one-time job. From 2.2 on, new versions install from Appliance → Updates in the admin, without a reinstall.

Local mailboxes (POP3) are no longer part of InfoStorm.
